Background of the Study
Boko Haram’s insurgency has significantly affected communities in northeastern Nigeria, with Konduga Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State being one of the worst-hit areas. Since the insurgency intensified, Konduga has suffered from destruction of infrastructure, mass displacement, loss of lives, and severe disruptions to social and economic activities (Usman, 2024). The Nigerian government, alongside local and international organizations, has implemented various peacebuilding initiatives to stabilize the area and foster community resilience. However, the effectiveness of these efforts remains a subject of debate.
Peacebuilding in conflict-affected communities involves reconciliation programs, rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, reintegrating displaced persons, and addressing the root causes of the conflict (Adebayo, 2023). In Konduga, interventions by governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community-based organizations have aimed at promoting social cohesion and preventing the resurgence of violence. Nonetheless, challenges such as inadequate funding, distrust between returnees and host communities, and the lingering threat of insurgent attacks continue to undermine peacebuilding efforts (Musa & Ibrahim, 2025).
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of ongoing peacebuilding efforts in Konduga, identify the challenges faced, and suggest possible improvements for sustainable peace in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Despite multiple peacebuilding initiatives in Boko Haram-affected communities, many regions, including Konduga, continue to experience instability and slow recovery. The reintegration of ex-combatants, reconciliation between victims and perpetrators, and the restoration of livelihoods remain major challenges (Aliyu, 2024). Additionally, weak institutional frameworks, lack of community trust in security forces, and poor governance have hindered the success of peacebuilding programs.
This study seeks to critically evaluate the peacebuilding initiatives in Konduga LGA, identifying the extent to which they have contributed to restoring normalcy and whether they have addressed the root causes of the conflict. The findings will provide insights into the effectiveness of these interventions and inform policy recommendations for sustainable peace.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the effectiveness of peacebuilding initiatives in Konduga LGA.
To identify the major challenges hindering successful peacebuilding in the region.
To propose strategies for improving peacebuilding efforts in Boko Haram-affected communities.
Research Questions

What are the major challenges hindering peacebuilding efforts in the region?
What strategies can be implemented to enhance sustainable peace in Konduga?
Research Hypotheses
Peacebuilding initiatives have significantly contributed to restoring stability in Konduga LGA.
Challenges such as poor governance, lack of trust, and insecurity have hindered the success of peacebuilding efforts in Konduga.
Implementing community-led initiatives and improving governance structures will enhance peacebuilding efforts in Boko Haram-affected communities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on peacebuilding efforts in Konduga LGA, Borno State, examining initiatives implemented between 2015 and 2025. It will involve interviews with community leaders, government officials, and NGO representatives. A limitation of the study is the difficulty in accessing certain conflict-affected areas due to security concerns, which may limit data collection.
